DOG SAFETY HAZARDS

ALCOHOL

If a dog ingests alcohol, it can potentially result in

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • lack of coordination
  • central nervous system depression
  • difficulty breathing
  • tremors
  • acidosis
  • coma
  • and even death.

Bottom line .. giving your dog the left-over beer is not funny - it can be hazardous.

Antifreeze, windshield washer fluid

Antifreeze products containing ethylene glycol are highly toxic  They can produce life-threatening kidney damage, even in small amounts.

Many windshield washer products contain methanol, which if ingested can cause:

  • drooling
  • vomiting
  • drunkenness and
  • severe central nervous system depression.

While methanol can cause blindness in humans, it does not appear to have this effect in cats and dogs.

CHAINING OUTSIDE UNATTENDED

A dog should never be chained outside unattended. Most dogs suffer personality quirks when tied and many can become downright aggressive. Dogs are better off in fenced areas, where they can see the barrier between them and the world, where they can feel somewhat safe from frolicking children.

Chocolate, including baking chocolate

Chocolate contains caffeine-like substances, and in some forms, a high amount of fat as well. Depending on the amount ingested, chocolate can potentially cause

  • vomiting
  • increased thirst and urination,
  • diarrhea,
  • hyperactivity,
  • elevated heart rate
  • and seizures

Clinical effects can be seen with the ingestion of as little as 1/4 ounce of baking chocolate by a 10-pound dog.

Top Reasons To Use Dog Leashes

Here are the top reasons we advocate that all owners use dog leashes and collars

  • Leashes prevent your dog from chasing animals, people, or bikes.
  • Its courteous to your neighbors, especially if they do not know your dog's level of obedience.
  • A single lost dog is one too many.
  • When used properly, most canines don't mind dog leashes or collars, in fact most like them.
  • You can pull your dog back to protect them, should there be something dangerous in the environment.
  • A dog leash could save your dog's life.
