Milk fever occurs in cows around calving. The disease is caused by low blood calcium level (hypocalcaemia), generally as a result of calving and milk production. During the final months of pregnancy and early lactation there is a considerable drain on a cow's blood calcium to supply the developing calf and as a constituent of colostrum and milk. The majority of milk fever cases occur from just before calving to within 10 days after calving, although they can occur up to 3 months after calving particularly if a cow is stressed. Milk fever, however, is most commonly seen within 72 hours of calving.
